Why?
Common sense is not quite so common as the name implies, and often conventional wisdom on any number of subjects seems to have evolved without recourse to reason. Even a cursory study of history shows large spans lasting centuries where there is no record of reason having any influence at all on the public discourse. Superstition, old wive's tales, and received dogma predominate. Why did it take so long for a Spinoza or a Copernicus or a Darwin to point out what seems so obvious to us now?
