Can AI Encode Research Judgment?

The Biggest Predictor of Research Quality is the One AI Ignores with Michele Ronsen

Everyone says judgment is the one thing AI can’t touch in research. So I tried to encode it, and handed the result to 31 people whose job is to spot weak research. Then I asked them to break it.

Not a particularly friendly crowd! Experienced researchers, several with decades in the field, working across deep quant, medical-device ethnography, academic research, and non-English qual, were deliberately chosen from outside my own expertise. Four continents were represented.

It held. And what they valued most wasn’t speed. It was that the tool refused to move forward on a badly scoped study and told them why.

I’m sharing what that taught me about where research actually succeeds or fails, live with Condens on Thursday, August 27. Free and recorded.
