How more and less mature UX teams differ

Typically more UX mature organizations have smaller, less detailed user research plans and less UX mature organizations have more comprehensive UXR plans. Many people find this counterintuitive but I think there are several contributing factors.

More UX Mature orgs tend to: 

• Have more familiarity with the UX research process

• Have more comfort with ambiguity

• Be more agile

• A greater understanding of what user research can and cannot answer

• A greater awareness and appreciation of why stakeholder involvement is so critical 

• Hands-on knowledge to draw from

• Have more customer-centric cultures and less siloed teams

• Enjoy more trust in the research process and with the researcher leading the work

Less UX Mature orgs tend to have the opposite in comparison:

• More caution

• More questions about the process 

• More stakeholders 

• More revisions

• Hesitation to participate or get it "just right"

• Less experience with the UX research process

In my experience, this translates into less UX Mature orgs often seeking more clarity and documentation about study details.
